GINGER & MUGWORT RITUALS | ROOTED IN TCM

When the womb runs cold, everything feels it.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, a cold, stagnant womb - 宫寒, Gong Han - is seen as a root pattern behind cramps, PMS, bloating and a slow postpartum recovery. Vitl is a warming daily ritual to bring the heat back, cycle after cycle

The root pattern

"Gong Han" — 宫寒, a cold womb.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, warmth and free-flowing blood are the foundation of women's health. When cold settles in the lower body — from air-conditioning, cold drinks, stress, or a naturally cold-prone constitution — circulation slows and blood can stagnate. TCM calls this 宫寒 and blood stasis.

Practitioners see this cold-and-stagnant pattern as a root that many familiar complaints trace back to — which is why every Vitl ritual does one thing: bring the warmth back, and keep it there.

Gong Han is a Traditional Chinese Medicine concept, not a Western medical diagnosis. Vitl products are wellness rituals, not treatments for any disease. If you have painful or irregular periods, please see a doctor.

One of the most common struggles in women's health

Whatever name you give it, the discomfort behind a "cold womb" is nearly universal — and for many it's brushed off as just part of being a woman.

~7 in 10

women worldwide experience period pain (dysmenorrhea).

Meta-analysis of 336 studies, PAIN, 2026
up to 90%

of adolescent girls report menstrual cramps.

Pooled prevalence studies
~1 in 4

have pain bad enough to need medication and miss school or work.

Dysmenorrhea prevalence studies
~48%

of reproductive-age women experience PMS.

StatPearls / GBD 2021

In a large survey of TCM body constitutions, the internal-cold "yang-deficient" pattern underlying Gong Han was among the most common imbalances — and women were more prone to it than men.

This is a practice, not a pill

Warmth returns over cycles — not overnight

A cold, stagnant pattern builds over years of cold days and busy seasons. Undoing it asks for the opposite: small, warm, consistent care, repeated cycle after cycle. That patient rebuilding is what 养身体 means.

Cycle 1

First warmth

Belly and feet feel warmer within minutes; a calming wind-down each evening.

Cycle 2

A steady habit

The ritual sticks. Warm hands and feet more of the time; a gentler run-up to your period.

Cycle 3

In tune

You start noticing your own patterns — and feeling more in step with them.

Cycle 4+

Warmth you keep

Warmth becomes your baseline, not a rescue. A ritual you look forward to.

Questions, answered honestly

Is "cold womb" (Gong Han) a real medical condition?

Gong Han (宫寒) is a concept from Traditional Chinese Medicine, not a Western medical diagnosis. It describes a patterns of cold and slowed circulation in the lower body that many women recognise in their own symptoms. Vitl products are warming self-care rituals - not medicines - and don't treat, cure or prevent any disease. If your periods are very painful or irregular, please see a doctor to rule out conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids.

How long until I feel a difference?

The warmth itself is immediate - the oil and the foot soak feel comforting from the first use. But the deeper aim, 养身体, is a gradual rebuilding of warmth over cycles, not a one-day fix. Most women use the rituals daily and reassess after two to three full cycles. Consistency is the whole point, which is why we build subscriptions around it.

Can I use the oil if I'm pregnant or tying to conceive?

Please be cautious. Mugwort and castor oil are both traditionally considered uterine stimulants, so we do not recommend applying the oil to your abdomen during pregnancy, and we suggest speaking with your doctor before using it while actively trying to conceive. For postpartum use, wait until you've been cleared by your provider. Vitl is a comforting ritual, not a fertility treatment and makes no fertility claims.

How does the subscription work?

Choose the full Ritual Set or any single product, pick a delivery rhythm, and a fresh supply arrives on schedule at 15% off with free shipping. Skip, change frequency or cancel anytime in one tap - no lock-in, no fees.

Do I need all three products?

No - start wherever your symptoms are loudest. The oil is the hero for cramps and bloating; the foot bath is best if you run cold or sleep poorly; the shampoo is a favourite postpartum. The set exists because the three reinforce each other, not because you must buy all of them.
